From analyst spreadsheets to a structured MSME credit assessment in the same day.

A lending marketplace was manually reviewing MSME financials in spreadsheets—slow, inconsistent, and impossible to scale. We built a structured underwriting engine that ingests GST, ITR, and bank data, scores them against configurable policy rules, and produces a credit committee-ready assessment in hours, not days.

The Challenge

The marketplace's underwriting process for MSME loans was entirely analyst-driven. Credit analysts manually reviewed GST returns, ITR documents, and bank statements in Excel, computed key financial ratios by hand, and prepared written credit assessments for committee review. The quality of assessment varied by analyst, the process took 5–7 days per application, and there was no consistent output format for credit committee review. With MSME loan volume growing, the approach couldn't scale without a proportional increase in headcount.

What We Built

We built an MSME underwriting engine that ingests structured GST returns data, ITR financial data, and 12–24 months of bank statements, extracts and computes standardised financial metrics, scores them against the client's configurable credit policy rules, and produces a structured credit assessment report. The report includes supporting evidence—revenue trends, cash flow analysis, obligation signals, bureau enrichment—in a format designed for efficient credit committee review with a decision workflow.

Key Capabilities Delivered

  • GST and ITR data extraction with standardised financial metrics computation
  • Bank statement scoring: cash flow analysis, income estimation, and obligation detection
  • Configurable credit policy rules for MSME credit tiers
  • Structured credit assessment output with supporting evidence for each decision factor
  • Credit committee review dashboard with decision and workflow tracking
  • Full audit trail on every assessment and decision

The Outcome

Decisioning consistency improved across the board—all assessments now follow the same structured framework regardless of which analyst is handling the case. Decision time dropped from 5–7 analyst days to same-day for most applications. The marketplace was able to scale origination volume without proportionally growing the underwriting team. The credit committee gained a standardised assessment format that made review meetings significantly more efficient.
